Hill Auditorium & Michigan League
UMS is delighted to honor the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) and Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) in its 15th annual Ford Honors Program. Founded in 1911, the SFS is widely considered to be among the country’s most artistically adventurous arts institutions. Leonard Bernstein protégé Michael Tilson Thomas assumed his post as the Symphony’s 11th music director in 1995. MTT’s 15 seasons with the SFS have been praised by critics for innovative programming, for bringing the works of American composers to the fore, and for innovative education and community programs. Over their eight visits to UMS, MTT and orchestra members have participated in many master classes and educational programs.
The SFS and MTT are visiting Ann Arbor for an artists’ residency on March 19–20, 2010. At the Saturday, March 20th performance, MTT conducts the orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, featuring Ann Arbor’s own Grammy Award-winning UMS Choral Union. In a brief pre-concert ceremony, UMS will present its Distinguished Artist Award to the SFS and MTT. The Gala package features a pre-concert Dinner, including the presentation of the DTE Energy Foundation Educator and School of the Year awards, and a post-concert Afterglow held at the Michigan League.
The Ford Honors Program raises funds for UMS education programs and recognizes Ford Motor Company’s longtime, generous support of UMS.
